Scripture Reflection
Matthew 7:13-14
"Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction... But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it."

"There is a way that appears to be right, but in the end it leads to death."
Proverbs 14:12
THE HEART (BEAT) BEHIND THE SONG
The Roads We Follow and the Gate We're Reaching For
One of the hardest lessons I've learned is that not everyone who enters your life arrives for the right reasons.
Sometimes people show up when you're hurting.
Sometimes they appear when you're vulnerable.
Sometimes they arrive with kind words, understanding ears, and advice that sounds exactly like what you want to hear.
At first, it can feel comforting, but over time, I began noticing something. Many of the loudest voices in our lives are often carrying wounds of their own. That isn't necessarily because they're bad people. In fact, most aren't.
I don't believe most people set out to hurt others. I think many hurting people genuinely want to help. The problem is that some often try to heal other people's wounds while still bleeding from thier own.
Sometimes the advice we give, the paths we encourage, and the choices we support are shaped more by our pain than by truth.
That realization became the foundation of Reachin' for the Gate.
The song began with the idea that pain attracts attention. We live in a world where struggles are often broadcast publicly.
People post their heartbreak.
Their frustrations.
Their fears.
Their disappointments.
And almost immediately, voices begin to gather around them.
Some offer wisdom.
Some offer comfort.
Some simply enjoy being part of the story.
The internet has made this more common than ever before. For every decision we make, there is a crowd somewhere willing to tell us we're right.
No matter what the decision is.
No matter what the consequences might be.
No matter how far it takes us from God's design.
Eventually I realized something uncomfortable: Agreement and truth are not always the same thing.
That is what inspired the line:
"Wrong roads dressed up heaven-made."
Sometimes the paths that look right aren't right at all.
Sometimes the voices encouraging us are sincerely mistaken.
Sometimes we convince ourselves that what we want must also be what God wants.
Scripture warns about this repeatedly. There is a way that seems right to a person, but its end leads somewhere very different. The older I get, the more I realize how easy it is to confuse validation with wisdom.
To mistake noise for love.
To mistake attention for truth.
To mistake agreement for guidance.
But eventually life forces us to ask harder questions.
Where is this road taking me?
Who am I becoming?
What am I chasing?
And most importantly:
Am I moving closer to God or farther away from Him?
That is where the song shifts.
What started as a reflection on the voices around us became a reflection on the condition of my own heart, because at the end of the day, every one of us will stand before God.
Not our friends.
Not social media.
Not the crowds.
Not the people who encouraged our decisions.
Us.
That realization changes how we view grace.
The chorus says:
"Prayin' there's still time to change..."
I think that line resonates because most people know they haven't lived perfectly.
We've all taken wrong turns.
We've all followed roads we shouldn't have followed.
We've all made decisions we wish we could undo.
But the Gospel is built upon the hope that as long as we have breath, there is still time for repentance.
There is still time for grace.
There is still time to change direction.
That is why the title matters. Reachin' for the Gate is not about arriving. It is about turning around. It is about recognizing that we've been walking toward the wrong destinations and choosing a different path.
A path that leads toward Christ.
A path marked by truth instead of validation.
A path guided by wisdom instead of noise.
A path that ultimately leads toward the narrow gate Jesus spoke about.
The beautiful part is that God does not require perfection before we begin walking toward Him. He simply asks us to start moving.
One step.
One choice.
One act of surrender at a time.
And every step toward Him is a step worth taking.

Live It Out
• Read Matthew 7:13-14 and honestly evaluate which paths in your life are leading you closer to God and which may be pulling you away.
• Spend time in prayer asking God to reveal any voices, influences, or beliefs that are shaping your decisions more than His truth.
• Identify one area where you need to change direction and take a practical step toward obedience this week.
• Before seeking advice, ask whether the counsel points you toward God's Word or simply reinforces what you already want to hear.
• Read Proverbs 14:12 and reflect on a time when something seemed right but ultimately led to unexpected consequences.
• Extend grace to yourself or someone else who has taken a wrong turn, remembering that God welcomes those who turn back toward Him.
• Thank God for His patience and mercy, and ask Him to keep guiding your steps toward the narrow gate that leads to life.
Lyrics:
Reachin' for the Gate
JC Lahoe
[Soft Intro]
Hope I ain't run too far from grace...
[Verse 1]
They come 'round when you lose control
Standin' close while you burn your soul
Kind words fall like summer rain
Secret smiles behind the pain
Funny how hurt becomes headline news
Your storm hides what they're goin' through
Everybody's fightin' somethin' deep
Easy to hide in another man's grief
[Pre-Chorus]
I got scars from the things I chased
Empty rooms and a heart misplaced...
Just hopin' there's still time for grace...
[Chorus]
Raised up rough on a road with no brakes
Learned real quick what the fast life takes
Wrong roads dressed up heaven-made
Left me broke from the roads I paved
Prayin' there's still time to change...
Now I'm reachin'...
Reachin' for the gate
[Verse 2]
Started seein' who sticks around
After all the smoke settles down
Real love ain't loud, don't scream your name
Don't feed the fire, don't fan the flame
Quit mistakin' noise for love
Truth showed itself from above
Little more peace with each step I take
Feels like somethin' pullin' toward that gate
[Pre-Chorus]
I got scars from the things I chased
Empty rooms and a heart misplaced...
Just hopin' there's still time for grace...
[Chorus]
Raised up rough on a road with no brakes
Learned real quick what the fast life takes
Wrong roads dressed up heaven-made
Left me broke from the roads I paved
Prayin' there's still time to change...
Now I'm reachin'...
Reachin' for the gate
Yeah... reachin' for the gate
[Bridge]
Didn't need noise to drown me out
Didn't need love from a broken crowd
Holy hands pulled me from the flame
Spoke hard truth and still knew my name
Funny how peace shows up through weight
When you stop livin' like it's too late
Little more light with each step I take
Still feels somethin' pullin' toward that gate
[Final Chorus]
Raised up rough on a road with no brakes
Learned real quick what the fast life takes
Wrong roads dressed up heaven-made
Left me broke from the roads I paved
Prayin' there's still time to change...
Now I'm reachin'...
Reachin' for the gate
Yeah... reachin' for the gate
Still reachin' for the gate
