THE HEART (BEAT) BEHIND THE SONG
Climbing Toward the Shadow
Some songs are written from a place of certainty. Climbing to the Shadow was written from a place of pursuit. It is the story of a person who knows there is something more, even if they cannot fully explain it yet. Someone who has felt the weight of fear, the pressure of life, the exhaustion of carrying burdens that never seem to go away.
Someone who is still climbing.
For many people, faith does not begin with understanding.
It begins with struggle.
It begins with questions.
It begins with storms.
It begins with reaching the end of our own strength and realizing we need something greater than ourselves.
That is where this song lives. The opening verses describe a battle many people know well.
The anxiety that appears when the world grows quiet. The fears that surface when there are no distractions left. The feeling that something unseen is fighting for your attention.
For years I tried to make sense of those moments. Sometimes it felt like life was simply difficult. Other times it felt like every step toward something good was met with resistance.
I've watched people begin pursuing God only to find themselves walking through some of the hardest seasons of their lives.
I've seen families experience loss.
I've seen sickness appear out of nowhere.
I've seen relationships tested.
I've watched people feel overwhelmed by challenges just as they were beginning to draw closer to God.
Whether that is spiritual warfare, increased awareness, or simply the reality of living in a broken world, one thing remains true: Following God does not eliminate the storm, but it does change where we find shelter.
That is what led me to Psalm 91.
One of the most beautiful chapters in all of Scripture. It speaks about dwelling in the shelter of the Most High and resting in the shadow of the Almighty. That phrase captured my imagination. The shadow of the Almighty.
At first glance, the title Climbing to the Shadow may sound like a journey toward darkness, but it is actually the exact opposite.
The shadow in this song is not darkness.
The shadow is evidence of God's presence.
A shadow cannot exist without light.
A shadow cannot exist without something greater creating it.
The shadow of the Almighty exists because God Himself is there. The climber in this song is not pursuing darkness. He is climbing through darkness.
Through fear.
Through pain.
Through uncertainty.
Through every obstacle standing between him and the shelter found beneath God's wings.
The closer he moves toward God, the more he finds himself standing under that shadow.
Covered by grace.
Covered by mercy.
Covered by protection.
That is why the chorus says:
"I'm climbin' to the shadow,
Searchin' for that shelter callin' out to me,
Prayin' for some grace underneath His wings."
The destination is not the shadow itself.
The destination is God.
The shadow simply represents what happens when we draw near enough to experience His presence. The bridge reveals another important truth. Many people begin seeking God long before they feel worthy of Him. They know they have mistakes.
Regrets.
Failures.
Wounds.
Yet something keeps pulling them forward anyway. That pull is often grace. God drawing us closer long before we fully understand what He is doing. The song never promises that the climb will be easy. In fact, it assumes the opposite.
The road is steep.
The air is thin.
The storms are real.
The battles continue.
But the climber refuses to stop.
Because he has seen enough of God's goodness to know the journey is worth it, and in the end, he discovers something remarkable.
The shelter he spent the entire song searching for was real.
The shadow was real.
The peace was real.
The grace was real.
And standing beneath the shadow of the Almighty was worth every step of the climb.
Sometimes faith begins with certainty, but more often, it begins with a simple decision:
Keep climbing.
Even through the storm.
Even through the fear.
Even through the darkness.
Keep climbing toward the One whose shadow brings life.

Live It Out
• Read Psalm 91:1-4 each day this week and reflect on what it means to dwell in the shelter of the Most High.
• Identify one fear or burden you've been carrying alone and intentionally surrender it to God in prayer.
• Read Ephesians 6:10-18 and evaluate which pieces of the armor of God need the most attention in your life right now.
• Spend five minutes each day thanking God for ways He has protected, guided, or provided for you in the past.
• When a challenge arises this week, pause and ask yourself: "Am I focusing on the storm, or am I moving toward God's shelter?"
• Encourage someone else who may be walking through a difficult season by reminding them that they do not have to climb alone.
Lyrics:
Climbin' to the Shadow
JC Lahoe
(Verse 1)
There's a weight in the air when the sun goes down
Like the silence is talkin' but won't make a sound
I've felt that fear creepin' in my chest
Like it knows every place I ain't found rest
There's a voice in the dark I can't outrun
And a war goin' on I ain't never won
Yeah I've tried to outrun what I don't understand
But it's always right there when I land...
(Pre-Chorus)
Every step just keeps gettin' steeper
Every breath burns like fire
But somethin' up there keeps pullin' me higher...
(Chorus)
I'm climbin' to the shadow
Searchin' for that shelter callin' out to me
Prayin' for some grace underneath His wings
Climbin' through the darkness, climbin' through the pain
I'm climbin' to the shadow through the rain
Yeah, I'm climbin' to that shadow
(Verse 2)
I've seen a kind of peace I can't explain
In the way some hearts don't break the same
Like they're standin' in somethin' I can't see
But I feel it when it gets to me
And I don't know it like I want to yet
But I ain't been able to forget
There's a place where the weight don't stay
And I'm gettin' closer every day...
(Pre-Chorus)
Every step just keeps gettin' steeper
Every breath burns like fire
But somethin' up there keeps pullin' me higher...
(Chorus)
I'm climbin' to the shadow
Searchin' for that shelter callin' out to me
Prayin' for some grace underneath His wings
Climbin' through the darkness, climbin' through the pain
I'm climbin' to the shadow through the rain
Yeah, I'm climbin' to that shadow
(Bridge)
I ain't been livin' like I should
But I've felt that pull, and I know it's good
And I don't deserve what's waitin' above
But I'm still climbin' toward that love
I've been lost, I've ignored Your call
But now I'll keep climbin' through it all
I won't stop tryin' till my legs give out
And even then, I'll find another route
(Final Chorus)
I'm climbin' to the shadow
Searchin' for that shelter callin' out to me
Prayin' for some grace underneath His wings
Climbin' through the darkness, climbin' through the pain
I'm still climbin' to the shadow through the rain
Yeah, I'm climbin' to that shadow
(Outro)
Now I'm standin' in that shadow
Please... don't let me go
Don't let go...
