Scripture Reflection

Romans 6:4

"We were therefore buried with Him through baptism into death in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life."

Romans 6:4

Matthew 3:16-17

"As soon as Jesus was baptized, He went up out of the water. At that moment heaven was opened... and a voice from heaven said, 'This is My Son, whom I love; with Him I am well pleased.'"

Matthew 3:16-17

THE HEART (BEAT) BEHIND THE SONG

Down in the River Jordan

Some moments divide your life into two parts.

Everything before...

and everything after.

My baptism became one of those moments. For most of my life, I tried carrying everything myself.

My mistakes.

My failures.

My regrets.

My pride.

My anger.

My ambition.

I believed if I worked hard enough, achieved enough, or became successful enough, I could somehow outrun the emptiness I carried inside.

I couldn't.

No amount of success could silence it.

No accomplishment could erase it.

No amount of work could wash it away.

The more I tried controlling my life, the heavier life became. That is where this song begins.

Not with confidence, but with surrender.

The River Jordan has always carried incredible meaning throughout Scripture. It was the river Israel crossed as they entered the Promised Land. It was where Naaman was healed.

Most importantly, it was where Jesus Himself was baptized before beginning His earthly ministry.

The river became a symbol of leaving one life behind and stepping into another.

When I wrote this song, I wasn't standing in the Jordan River.

But spiritually... that's exactly where I felt I was standing.

On one side was the man I had spent decades trying to become. On the other side was the man God was calling me to be. The hardest part wasn't walking into the water. The hardest part was admitting I couldn't save myself anymore.

That is what baptism means to me.

Not that the water itself possesses some magical power, but that it represents a public declaration that I can no longer carry the weight of my own salvation.

I need Jesus.

I remember walking toward the baptismal that day. A hundred people filled that room. Yet somehow they disappeared.

Years earlier, when I played baseball, I was a pitcher.  When I was on that mound, I would experience  tunnel vision. All I could see was the catcher's glove.

The exact same thing happened that day.

The room faded away.

The applause didn't exist.

The only thing I could see was the water.

A close friend baptized me that day. Ironically, he wasn't someone most people would expect.

He had been the lead singer of a thrash metal band. Yet God had used him to help bring me to Christ. It only felt right that he would be the one standing beside me.

As I stepped into the water, it was warm. Almost body temperature.

Peaceful.

He looked at me with tears in his eyes. Then he asked the question every believer eventually answers for themselves.

Do you accept Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior?

I said yes.

Then he lowered me beneath the water.

For just a moment...

everything disappeared.

When I came back up, I couldn't see clearly because water filled my eyes. Instead, I remember flashes of color. Warmth spreading through my chest. The same overwhelming presence of God I had experienced months earlier when a massage therapist unexpectedly prayed over me.

Then something else happened. I began hearing the room again.

First as a distant rumble.

Then applause.

Then cheering.

Only then did I realize all those people had been celebrating the moment with me.

It felt as though Heaven itself was rejoicing.

The old man hadn't been erased.

My past hadn't disappeared.

My memories were still there.

My failures were still part of my story.

But they no longer defined who I was.

That is why the chorus says:

"Leave the old soul in that water...

Bring the new one back alive."

Baptism doesn't erase our history. It changes our identity.

We stop living as people trying to earn God's acceptance.

We begin living as people who have already received His grace.

The water didn't make me perfect. It made me surrendered.

For the first time in my life, I truly understood something that had always terrified me.

I was never in control to begin with.

Oddly enough...

that realization didn't create fear.

It created freedom.

Because once I stopped trying to be my own savior...

I finally met the One who already was.

Reflection & Study

Questions Worth Wrestling With

1.  What burdens or regrets have you been carrying that God is asking you to surrender?

2.  Have you ever tried to fix your life through your own strength instead of trusting Christ?

3.  What does baptism personally mean to you beyond simply getting wet?

4.  Is there an area of your life where fear is keeping you from taking the next step of faith?

5.  Are you still allowing your past to define who you are, or have you embraced your identity in Christ?

6.  What does it mean to "die to yourself" in your daily life?

7.  Is there a part of your old life that you're still holding on to instead of leaving beneath the water?

8.  When you think of forgiveness, do you truly believe God's grace is sufficient for your sins?

 9.  Have you publicly declared your faith in Christ through baptism or another act of obedience?

10.  If you were standing at the edge of the River Jordan today, what would you need to leave behind before stepping into the water?

11.  How has surrendering control to God brought freedom into your life?

12.  Who in your life needs to hear your testimony about what Christ has done for you?

                                                               Live It Out

  1. Read Romans 6:1–11 and reflect on what it means to die to your old self and walk in new life through Christ.

  2. If you have never been baptized, prayerfully consider taking that next step of obedience and talk with a trusted pastor or church leader.

  3. Write down one burden, regret, or sin you've continued carrying. Pray over it, then destroy the paper as a reminder that God's forgiveness is greater than your past.

  4. Share your testimony with one person this week. You never know who may be waiting to hear how God changed your life.

  5. Spend time thanking God—not only for forgiving your sins, but for giving you a completely new identity in Christ.

  6. Each morning this week, begin your day by praying, "Lord, help me live today as the new person You created me to be, not the person I used to be."

Lyrics:

Down in the River Jordan

JC Lahoe

Verse 1

Dust flying off these old back roads
Bible sitting on the seat
Sunset dying in the rearview
Prayers I never knew to speak

Been fighting with the man I am
Since I was just a reckless kid
Tonight I drove down to the water
Hoping something here might give

Pre-Chorus

I could hear that river calling
Like it knew my name somehow
Every step felt like surrender
Standing at the edge right now

Chorus 1

Knee deep in the River Jordan
Heart heavy as a stone
Running from the truth so long
I damn near lost my soul

All my sins and demons
Let them drown before I rise
If that water can't forgive me
I ain't got nowhere left to hide

Verse 2

Bare feet on that muddy shoreline
Cold wind cutting through my skin
Every step out in that water
Felt like facing who I'd been

I ain't saying I was ready
I just knew I couldn't stay
Somewhere between fear and freedom
I let the river take the weight

Pre-Chorus

I could hear that river calling
Like it knew my name somehow
Every step felt like surrender
Standing at the edge right now

Chorus 2

Down in the River Jordan
I brought the man I used to be
All my shame and all my scars
Dragging chains behind me

All my sins and demons
Let them drown before I rise
Leave the old soul in that water
Bring the new one back alive

Bridge

I ain't looking for perfection
I just need a place to start
So I'm laying every burden
At the bottom of my heart

If the river keeps no record
Of the man I was before
Then tonight down in the Jordan
I don't have to hurt no more

Final Chorus

Down in the River Jordan
I lost the man I used to be
All that shame and all those scars
Ain't got no hold on me

All my sins and demons
Stayed beneath that tide
Left the old soul in that water
And brought a new one back alive

Outro (Soft / Stripped Down)

Leave the old soul in that water
And brought a new one back alive

Down in the River Jordan...
Down in the River Jordan...

The closer we walk with Christ, the more His love begins to shape our own. True beauty is found not in what we receive, but in the grace we extend to others. She Loves Like Heaven is a reflection on a life so deeply rooted in God's love that His compassion becomes visible through every word, every sacrifice, and every act of kindness.
