Scripture Reflection
John 1:1–5
"In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. Through Him all things were made; without Him nothing was made that has been made. In Him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it."
John 1:1–5
Colossians 1:16–17
"For in Him all things were created... all things have been created through Him and for Him. He is before all things, and in Him all things hold together."
Colossians 1:16–17
THE HEART (BEAT) BEHIND THE SONG
Before There Was Light
There are moments when language simply isn't big enough.
Trying to describe the beginning of everything is one of them.
Our minds naturally search for something familiar. We imagine darkness because we've experienced darkness. We imagine silence because we've heard silence. We imagine empty space because we've looked into the night sky.
But before creation...
There wasn't even darkness... Darkness is still something.
There wasn't empty space... Space hadn't been created yet.
There wasn't time.
There wasn't distance.
There wasn't silence waiting to be broken.
There was simply...
God.
That's one of the reasons I wanted this song to begin so quietly. I wanted the music to leave room for imagination. Not because we can fully understand eternity, but because we should never stop wondering about it.
Genesis begins with one of the most familiar verses in Scripture:
"In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth." (Genesis 1:1)
John takes us even further back.
He doesn't begin with creation.
He begins before creation.
"In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God." (John 1:1)
That single sentence changes everything.
Before there was light...
The Word already existed.
Before there were mountains...
The Word already existed.
Before oceans found their shores...
Before stars filled the heavens...
Before the first sunrise ever painted the horizon...
Jesus already was.
John doesn't describe Him as someone who came into existence. He describes Him as the eternal Word through whom everything came into being.
That's a breathtaking thought.
Every galaxy.
Every mountain.
Every cedar tree swaying in the wind.
Every river finding its way to the sea.
Every living cell.
Every heartbeat.
Every breath.
None of it exists apart from Him.
Paul writes,
"For in Him all things were created... all things have been created through Him and for Him. He is before all things, and in Him all things hold together." (Colossians 1:16–17)
I love the phrase "hold together."
It reminds me that creation wasn't simply designed by God and left to run on its own.
Every moment is still sustained by the One who spoke it into existence. The more I study creation, the more my worship grows.
Whether I look through a telescope at distant galaxies or through a microscope at a single living cell, I see remarkable order, beauty, and design. The same God who fashioned unimaginably vast galaxies also designed the intricate complexity of the smallest forms of life. The universe isn't chaotic, it bears the fingerprints of a Creator who delights in wisdom, purpose, and beauty.
That doesn't answer every question. But it fills me with awe.
One of my favorite images in this song comes in the bridge:
"The Author stepped into His story."
The God who spoke light into existence didn't remain distant from His creation.
He entered it.
John later writes,
"The Word became flesh and made His dwelling among us." (John 1:14)
Think about that for a moment.
The One who measured the galaxies accepted human hands.
The One who spoke stars into existence learned to speak as a child.
The One who breathed life into Adam willingly gave His own life to redeem humanity.
The Architect stepped inside His own masterpiece.
The Author entered His own story.
Not because He needed us.
Because He loved us.
Hebrews tells us,
"The Son is the radiance of God's glory and the exact representation of His being, sustaining all things by His powerful word." (Hebrews 1:3)
That same Word still speaks today. He still creates hope where there was despair.
Light where there was darkness.
Life where there was death.
Peace where there was fear.
That's what I hope this song does.
Not simply explain creation.
Not settle every mystery.
But invite us to pause...
To wonder...
To worship...
And to remember that before there was anything else...
There was the Word.
And the Word...
...was God.

Live It Out
• Read Genesis 1:1–3, John 1:1–5, Colossians 1:16–17, and Hebrews 1:3 slowly. Let the words settle instead of rushing through them.
• Spend time outside this week without distractions. Observe creation and thank God for the beauty, order, and life surrounding you.
• Choose one aspect of creation... a tree, a flower, the night sky, running water, and spend a few minutes reflecting on what it reveals about God's creativity and power.
• Begin each morning by reading a few verses from God's Word before looking at your phone or other distractions.
• Before going to bed each evening, ask yourself:
"Did I take time today to notice the Creator behind His creation?"

The Word
JC Lahoe
Verse 1
No sunrise crowned the morning…
No moon to rule the night…
No wind to sing through cedar trees…
No flame… no dust… no light…
Glory filled eternity…
Stillness filled the endless deep…
Mysteries beyond all knowing…
Silence… without end… complete…
Pre-Chorus
Silence held eternity…
Nothing breathed and nothing stirred…
Then the Father spoke creation…
Through the everlasting Word…
Chorus
In the beginning…
Was the Word…
The Word was with God…
The Word was God…
Light before the dawn…
Truth before the tongue…
Love before it had a name…
Jesus…
You are… the Word…
Verse 2
Now sunrise crowned the morning…
Now moon to rule the night…
Now wind sang through the cedar trees…
Now flame… now dust… now life…
Mountains reached toward heaven…
Rivers found the waiting sea…
Every living thing awakened…
All creation learned to sing…
Pre-Chorus
Silence held eternity…
Nothing breathed and nothing stirred…
Then the Father spoke creation…
Through the everlasting Word…
Chorus
In the beginning…
Was the Word…
The Word was with God…
The Word was God…
Light before the dawn…
Truth before the tongue…
Love before it had a name…
Jesus…
You are… the Word…
Bridge
Then Heaven touched the broken earth…
The Infinite drew near…
The Author stepped into His story…
Love was standing here…
Mercy wrapped in human breathing…
Glory clothed in skin and bone…
The God who spoke the stars to life…
Had come to lead us home…
Final Chorus
In the beginning…
Was the Word…
The Word was with God…
The Word was God…
Light before the dawn…
Truth before the tongue…
Love before it had a name…
Jesus…
You are… the Word…
