THE HEART (BEAT) BEHIND THE SONG

The Work Worth Finishing

Many of us spend our lives building something.

Some people build careers.

Others build businesses, reputations, wealth, or success.

None of those things are wrong, but I've learned that anything built only for ourselves can disappear much faster than we ever imagined. Life has a way of reminding us that promotions fade, possessions wear out, and even our greatest accomplishments eventually become memories.

For years, I poured myself into caring for others. As a nurse and later as a doctor, I had the privilege of walking beside people during some of the most meaningful moments of their lives.

I also stood beside many of them during their final moments. Watching people face death has a way of changing what you think is important. Rarely did anyone wish they had worked another hour or accumulated one more achievement.

What mattered most were the people they loved, the faith they held onto, and the legacy they would leave behind.

My own faith didn't become strong overnight. Like many people, I wrestled with disappointment, fear, questions, and seasons when life felt incredibly heavy.

There came a point where I felt completely exhausted and unsure of what my purpose was. In one of the simplest prayers I've ever prayed, I asked God to show me why I was here. I told Him that if He still had a purpose for my life, I wanted to fulfill it before He called me home.

A few days later, I wrote my first song.

I can't fully explain what happened after that. Something inside of me came alive. The depression didn't suddenly disappear, but it slowly began losing its grip as purpose took its place.

Every new song felt like another stone being placed on a wall I didn't even know I was building.

Every lyric became another prayer.

Every story became another opportunity to point someone toward Christ.

That's where "I Won't Come Down" was born.

The song is inspired by Nehemiah, who was rebuilding the walls of Jerusalem when his enemies repeatedly called him down from the work God had given him to do. His response has echoed through history:

"I am carrying on a great project and cannot go down." - Nehemiah 6:3

I don't believe most of us are called to build stone walls, but I do believe every one of us is building something. Every decision becomes another stone.

Every act of kindness

Every prayer

Every sacrifice

Every moment of obedience is shaping the life we're leaving behind.

Along the way, there will always be voices inviting us to quit, compromise, chase something easier, or settle for something smaller than God's purpose.

Those voices are real.

But so is the calling.

When the chorus says,

"They keep shouting from below... I keep laying one more stone..."

it's a reminder that faithfulness isn't usually found in dramatic moments. More often, it's found in the quiet decision to keep showing up.

One more prayer.

One more act of obedience.

One more day of trusting God when you can't yet see the finished wall.

Paul encouraged believers with these words:

"Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a                              harvest if we do not give up." - Galatians 6:9

That promise has become deeply personal to me.

I don't know how many people these songs will reach. It may only be a few. It may be more than I ever imagine. That's not my part to determine. My responsibility is simply to keep building what God has placed in front of me.

Stone by stone.

Song by song.

Story by story.

Because when God gives you a purpose, there comes a moment when you realize you're no longer working to build your own name.

You're building for His.

And once you've experienced that...

Why would you ever come down?

Reflection & Study

Questions Worth Wrestling With

1.  What are you building with the life God has entrusted to you?

2.  Are you investing more of your time building your own kingdom or God's Kingdom?

3.  What "voices from below" distract you from the work God has called you to do?

4.  Has God placed a dream, ministry, or purpose on your heart that you've been tempted to abandon?

5.  What fears or distractions keep you from fully pursuing God's calling?

6.  How have your greatest struggles prepared you for the work God is doing in your life today?

7.  If God asked you to faithfully lay "one more stone," what would that look like this week?

8.  Are you seeking the approval of people, or the approval of the One who called you?

9.  What legacy are you building that will still matter long after you're gone?

10.  Where has God been asking you to persevere instead of giving up?

11.  How can your daily work, relationships, and gifts become part of building God's Kingdom?

12.  If someone watched the way you live each day, would they recognize that you're building something eternal?

                                                                Live It Out

• Read Nehemiah 6:1–9 and reflect on why Nehemiah refused to leave the work God had given him. Ask God to strengthen your resolve when distractions come.

• Choose one area of your life where you've been tempted to quit. Commit that area to God in prayer and take one practical step forward today.

• Write down one way you can build God's Kingdom this week through your words, service, generosity, or encouragement. Then intentionally do it.

• Spend time asking God to reveal any distractions that are pulling you away from His purpose. Surrender them to Him and refocus on the work He's placed before you.

• Encourage someone who may be growing weary. A simple conversation, prayer, or act of kindness may be the "one more stone" that helps them keep building.

• At the end of each day, ask yourself: "Did I spend today building something temporary, or something eternal?"

Lyrics:

I Won't Come Down

JC Lahoe

Verse 1

Dust keeps hanging in the morning
Hammer ringing through the haze
Every stone's another promise
I refuse to walk away

Voices echo from the valley
"Leave that dream before it falls"
But every swing keeps getting louder
Than the voices from below

Pre-Chorus

The higher I climb
The smaller they sound
I'm finally seeing what they never found
This calling's stronger than the crowd...

Chorus

I won't come down...

I won't back away
Too much to build in Your name
They keep shouting from below

I keep laying one more stone

One more stone
One more prayer
One more day 'cause I'm still here

I'm still building while the battle's on...

I won't come down.

Verse 2

Every scar became a lesson
Every loss revealed a road
Never knew what I was building
Till I had this weight to hold

Now the wind don't shake these shoulders
Like it did when I was young
Funny how the hardest battles
Teach your heart what can't be sung

Pre-Chorus

The higher I climb
The smaller they sound
I'm finally seeing what they never found
This calling's stronger than the crowd...

Chorus

I won't come down...

I won't back away
Too much to build in Your name
They keep shouting from below

I keep laying one more stone

One more stone
One more prayer
One more day 'cause I'm still here

I'm still building while the battle's on...

I won't come down.

Bridge

If you're standing where the fire falls
If you're holding on alone
Don't let the voices steal your purpose
Don't walk away from what you've known

Every kingdom starts with someone
Choosing faith instead of fear
Keep your hands upon the calling
The Builder's always near...

Spoken / Country Rap

You keep yelling, "Come down..."
I got work right now.
You keep betting I'll quit...
I just don't know how.

Same boots... same dust...
Same scars... same trust...
One more swing... one more stone...
Brick by brick until You're known.

You keep talking...
I keep walking.
You keep doubting...
I keep swinging.
You keep throwing...
I keep growing.
You see rubble...
I see home.

I didn't climb this high...
Just to hear the noise below.
Every step keeps getting lighter...
Every stone keeps stealing hope
From the fear that used to be my own.

Final Pre-Chorus

The higher I climb
The smaller they sound
I'm finally seeing what they never found
This calling's stronger than the crowd...

Final Chorus

I won't come down...

I won't back away
Too much to build in Your name
They keep shouting from below

I keep laying one more stone

One more stone
One more prayer
One more day 'cause I'm still here
I'm still building while the battle's on...

I won't come down...
I won't come down...

I'm still building while the battle's on...

I won't come down.
