THE HEART (BEAT) BEHIND THE SONG
The People Who Lead Us Home
Some songs reveal their meaning the moment they're written.
Others slowly uncover their purpose as you continue listening.
"The Road Back Home" was one of those songs.
When I first began writing it, I thought I was writing a personal love song for Misty. Like many of the songs I've written for her, it started as a way of expressing gratitude for the kindness, encouragement, and faith she has brought into my life.
However; somewhere along the way, I realized the song wasn't simply about one person.
It was about the people God places in our lives to lead us back to Him.
Every one of us is shaped by the voices we choose to listen to. The people around us influence the way we think,
the choices we make
the values we hold
and ultimately the direction our lives begin to take.
Sometimes we don't even notice it happening until we look back and realize how far we've traveled.
There was a season in my life when everything felt uncertain. During that time, something unexpected began happening. People started inviting me to church. Conversations about faith became more frequent. God kept placing people in my path who gently pointed me toward Christ, not with pressure or condemnation, but with patience, love, and quiet consistency.
Looking back, I don't believe those moments were coincidences.
I believe God was leading me home.
As my faith began to grow, I also started asking difficult questions about my own influence.
Was I helping the people around me move closer to Christ, or farther away?
Was I encouraging faith, or simply going along with whatever life placed in front of me?
Those questions changed me.
The Bible reminds us,
"Walk with the wise and become wise, for a companion of fools suffers harm." - Proverbs 13:20
The people we spend time with matter.
Their influence matters.
But this doesn't mean we should isolate ourselves from those who are struggling or walk away from friendships simply because someone isn't where we hope they'll be spiritually.
Jesus spent His life walking toward broken people, not away from them. The difference is found in guarding our own hearts.
We are called to love others deeply while allowing Christ, not the culture around us, to shape who we become. Our mission is not to withdraw from the world, but to become the kind of people who help others find hope, truth, and grace.
That's why the chorus speaks of taking life stone by stone, step by step. None of us arrives home all at once. We grow through countless small moments of faithfulness, often because someone cared enough to keep pointing us back to Jesus.
Hebrews encourages believers:
"And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds... encouraging one another." — Hebrews 10:24–25
That's the heart of this song.
Sometimes God changes our lives through a sermon.
Sometimes through a trial.
And sometimes through an ordinary person who quietly keeps reminding us where home really is.
The question this song leaves us with isn't simply, "Who is leading me?"
It's also,
"Am I becoming someone who helps lead others home?"

Questions Worth Wrestling With
1. Who has God placed in your life that has quietly drawn you closer to Him?

4. In what ways are your closest friendships shaping your character and your relationship with God?
5. Is there someone God has used to strengthen your faith that you've never properly thanked?
6. How has God used difficult seasons to lead you back to Him?
7. When others spend time with you, do they leave feeling closer to Christ?
8. Are you intentionally guarding your heart while still loving those who need hope?
9. Who in your life may be waiting for someone to quietly point them back to God?
10. What "road" has God been inviting you to walk that you've been hesitant to follow?
11. How can your words, actions, and everyday conversations become signposts that lead others home?
12. If someone looked at your life, would they recognize that you're walking toward Christ, and inviting others to walk with you?
Live It Out
· Reach out to someone who has encouraged your walk with Christ. Thank them for the influence they've had on your life and let them know how God has used them.
· Read Proverbs 13:20 and Hebrews 10:24–25. Ask God to help you become both a wise companion and an encourager of others.
· Spend intentional time this week with someone whose faith challenges you to grow spiritually. Listen, learn, and ask them what has helped strengthen their walk with Christ.
· Think of one person who may be drifting from God. Instead of judging or distancing yourself, pray for them and look for an opportunity to encourage them with kindness, truth, and love.
· Ask yourself each morning, "Lord, help my life point someone closer to You today."
· Before going to bed each evening, reflect on one conversation you had that day and ask, "Did my words help lead someone a little closer to the road back home?"
Lyrics:
The Road Back Home
JC Lahoe
Verse 1
There were days the load felt endless
Dust kept rising with each step
I kept laying one more stone down
Trusting God with what was next...
Somewhere I quit listening
Somewhere life just pulled me through
Then I found a heart still chasing faith...
That awakened something new
Pre-Chorus
A quiet voice kept whispering
In places long gone numb
Like the wind through broken branches...
Calling me back where I'd come from
Chorus
Stone by stone
Step by step
You were there through every breath
Hand in hand
Day by day
You kept pointing me to faith
Mercy led me all along...
Guiding me to the road back home
Verse 2
You'd tell another Bible story
Ask me what I thought it meant
Somehow every conversation
Left my heart a little bent...
Morning prayers and quiet moments
Brought these weary bones to life
Now I see what grace had written...
Hidden through those harder nights
Pre-Chorus
A quiet voice kept whispering
In places long gone numb
Like the wind before the sunrise...
Reminding me of all You've done
Chorus
Stone by stone
Step by step
You were there through every breath
Hand in hand
Day by day
You kept pointing me to faith
Mercy led me all along...
Guiding me to the road back home
Bridge
When this life gets loud around us
And the answers aren't enough
Keep reminding me of mercy
Keep reminding me of love
We'll keep writing down these stories
We'll keep writing songs of truth
If this road keeps leading homeward...
I'll keep walking it with you
Final Chorus
Stone by stone
Step by step
Now we're here through every breath
Hand in hand
Day by day
Still we're walking here by faith
Mercy led us all along...
Guiding us to the road back home
Outro
Every road...
Every stone...
Led me where I belonged...
To the road back home...
Back before the fear...
Back before the fall...
Back to simple faith...
The road back home.
