Scripture Reflection

Psalm 127:1

"Unless the Lord builds the house, the builders labor in vain."

Psalm 127:1

Joshua 24:15

"But as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord."

Joshua 24:15

THE HEART (BEAT) BEHIND THE SONG

Building More Than a House

Some songs begin with a personal story. This one began with someone else's dream.

A gentleman reached out to me after purchasing property where he hoped to build a new home. He asked if I would write a song that felt like a prayer, a blessing over the land, the house, and the life his family hoped to build there.

At first, I wasn't sure where I would go. I don't know much about construction.

The more I prayed over it, the more I realized I wasn't writing about a house at all.

I was writing about a home. There's a difference.

Anyone can build walls.

Anyone can pour concrete, frame a roof, and hang doors.

But a home is built much differently. Homes are built one prayer at a time.

One act of forgiveness at a time.

One family meal.

One bedtime story.

One answered prayer.

One difficult conversation.

One moment of grace after another.

That's why the very first words of the song say,

                "Before the walls...
                 Before the welcome home...
                 Before the memories...
                 We pray..."

Because before we ask God to bless a house... we should first invite Him to live there.

Scripture reminds us,

"Unless the Lord builds the house, the builders labor in vain." (Psalm 127:1)

That verse isn't really about construction. It's about priorities. A beautiful house without God's presence is still just a building. Even the simplest home becomes something sacred when Christ is welcomed inside.

As I continued writing, I began imagining the future that hadn't happened yet.

Children laughing down the hallway.

Coffee brewing before sunrise.

Grandchildren running through the front door.

Neighbors finding refuge during difficult seasons.

Friends gathering around the dinner table.

Bibles opened.

Prayers whispered.

Stories shared.

Those are the things that truly make a home.

One of my favorite verses says,

                   "Little shoes by the doorway...
                   Coffee on the stove...
                   Grandkids running circles...
                   Calling this place home..."

That's the dream. Not a perfect house. A faithful one.

Joshua declared,

"As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord." (Joshua 24:15)

He wasn't talking about architecture. He was making a decision about the kind of home his family would become. That's the prayer hidden inside this song.

Not that every day will be easy.

Not that every room will always be filled with laughter.

Life will still bring hardship. There will still be loss, disagreements, seasons of waiting, and moments when the future feels uncertain, but if Christ remains at the center, the foundation never changes.

By the end of the song, I realized something else. One day, every one of us will be gone.

Someone else will eventually own the house.

The walls will be repainted.

The furniture replaced.

Our names may even be forgotten.

But I hope something remains.

The bridge says,

                  "When these walls grow older...
                    When our names are gone...
                    Let the love You planted...
                    Still keep growing on..."

That may be my favorite part of the entire song, because the greatest homes aren't remembered for how expensive they were. They're remembered for how people felt inside them.

Were they welcomed?

Were they loved?

Were they forgiven?

Did they encounter Christ there?

Jesus said,

"Anyone who hears these words of Mine and puts them into practice is like a wise                      man who built his house on the rock." (Matthew 7:24–25)

That kind of foundation survives storms. Not because the house never faces wind or rain...

but because it was built upon something that cannot be shaken.

My prayer is that every family who hears this song will remember that before we build our homes... God desires to build our hearts.

Because when our hearts belong to Him...

even ordinary ground becomes holy.

Reflection & Study

Questions Worth Wrestling With

1.  What makes a house feel like a home to you?

2.  If someone walked into your home today, would they experience peace, grace, and love?

3.  What traditions or values are you intentionally passing on to the next generation?

4.  Is your home a place where people feel welcomed, or simply where people live?

5.  How often do you invite God into your daily life at home through prayer, Scripture, or gratitude?

6.  What memories do you hope your children, grandchildren, or loved ones will carry with them long after you're gone?

7.  If the walls of your home could tell your story, what would they say mattered most?

8.  Are you building your life around comfort and success, or around God's purpose for your family?

9.  Who has found refuge, encouragement, or hope because of your home?

10.  What changes could you make today that would help your home reflect Christ more clearly?

11.  When future generations remember your home, what do you hope they remember most?

12.  Is your greatest investment going into your house... or into the people who call it home?

                                                                Live It Out

  • Read Psalm 127:1 and spend time thanking God for your home, whatever it looks like today. Ask Him to be the true foundation of everything built within it.

  • Walk through your home and pray over each room. Ask God to fill every space with His peace, wisdom, forgiveness, and love.

  • Gather your family, or those closest to you, for a meal this week. Before eating, spend a few moments thanking God for His faithfulness and praying over the future of your home.

  • Choose one small way to make your home more welcoming this week. Invite someone in for dinner, encourage a neighbor, or simply create space where someone feels seen, heard, and loved.

  • Start one new family tradition that points your household toward Christ. It could be reading a short passage of Scripture together, praying before bed, sharing what you're thankful for, or setting aside one evening each week to intentionally spend time together.

  • Ask yourself this question before you leave your home each morning: "Am I building a beautiful house... or a God-honoring home?" Let your answer shape the way you love, forgive, and serve the people who walk through your front door.

Lyrics:

Holy Ground

JC Lahoe

[Intro]

Before the walls...
Before the welcome home...
Before the memories...
We pray...

Verse 1

Ain't laying brick...
Till we lay this down...
Hands in the dirt...
Hearts on the ground...

Every dream needs something...
It can stand upon...
'Cause a house ain't a home...
If the Lord ain't involved...

Seen too many castles...
Built up in the sand...
Money on the table...
Still an empty man...

So we're building more...
Than these walls of stone...
We're asking Heaven...
Lord, make this house Your home...

Chorus

Make this holy ground...
Right here where we stand...
Every dream we're building...
Resting in Your hands...

Every room...
Every prayer...
Every memory starts with You...

May this home...
Bring You glory too...

Verse 2

Faith poured the foundation...
Hope raised every wall...
Intentions drew the blueprint...
When we answered the call...

Knowledge reads the plans...
Self-control holds the line...
Perseverance keeps on swinging...
One nail at a time...

Humility reminds us...
None of this is ours...
Kindness sets the table...
For every searching heart...

Joy ain't something purchased...
It isn't paint or views...
Joy walks through the front door...
Every time it walks with You...

Chorus

Make this holy ground...
Right here where we stand...
Every dream we're building...
Resting in Your hands...

Every room...
Every prayer...
Every memory starts with You...

May this home...
Bring You glory too...

Bridge

When these walls grow older...
When our names are gone...
Let the love You planted...
Still keep growing on...

Brick by brick...
Prayer by prayer...
You were always with us there...

May this home...
Bring You glory too...

Verse 3

Little shoes by the doorway...
Coffee on the stove...
Grandkids running circles...
Calling this place home...

Neighbors finding refuge...
When the nights were long...
Broken hearts discovering...
They were never gone...

Bibles on the table...

Stories being told...
Grace before the supper...
Worth more than silver or gold...

Not because we're perfect...
Not because we're strong...

Just a house surrendered...
To the One who brought us home...

If these walls could testify...
They'd never speak our name...
They'd tell of every answered prayer...
And Who deserves the praise...

Final Chorus

Make this holy ground...
Right here where we stand...
Every dream we're building...
Resting in Your hands...

Every room...
Every prayer...
Every memory starts with You...

May this home...
Bring You glory too...

Make this holy ground...
Right here where we stand...
Every dream we're building...
Resting in Your hands...

Every room...
Every prayer...
Every memory starts with You...

May this home...
Bring You glory too...

Amen...
