THE HEART (BEAT) BEHIND THE SONG
The Mountain Changes You
Some songs begin with my own story.
This one began with someone else's.
A close friend told me about completing a Spartan race just before turning fifty.
At first, I thought he was simply telling me about an incredible physical challenge.
Sixteen miles (after penalities).
Mud.
Steep climbs.
Obstacles.
Exhaustion.
But as he talked, I realized the race wasn't really about the mountain.
It was about everything he was holding onto.
Life hadn't been easy for him. Like many people, he'd walked through loss, disappointment, injustice, and seasons that could have easily hardened his heart.
Yet instead of allowing those experiences to define him, he made a decision.
He would keep climbing.
As he described those miles, something stood out to me. He wasn't trying to outrun other runners. He was trying to leave pieces of his past behind.
Fear.
Anger.
Disappointment.
Regret.
The voices that kept telling him he wasn't enough.
That's where this song was born.
The chorus says,
"Leave it on the mountain...
Leave it in the rain..."
Those words aren't really about a mountain. They're about surrender. Some things were never meant to be carried for a lifetime. Some burdens have become so familiar that we mistake them for part of who we are.
But God never intended fear to define His children.
Or shame.
Or bitterness.
Or yesterday's failures.
One of my favorite lines in the song says,
"The mountain never changes...
The mountain changes you."
That's true far beyond a Spartan race. The mountains in our lives don't always disappear.
Cancer.
Loss.
Broken relationships.
Financial hardship.
Loneliness.
The climb is real.
The pain is real.
But if we continue trusting God through it, something inside us begins to change.
Strength replaces fear.
Perseverance replaces doubt.
Faith replaces despair.
James writes,
"Blessed is the one who perseveres under trial..." (James 1:12)
God doesn't waste difficult seasons. He uses them to shape us into people who can encourage others facing their own mountains.
What moved me most about my friend's story wasn't that he finished the race.
It was why he finished.
He wanted his children to see that difficult things don't have to defeat you. That courage isn't the absence of fear. It's choosing to keep taking the next step anyway.
Sometimes our greatest victories aren't the ones that earn medals. They're the ones our children quietly watch us live.
The way we respond to hardship.
The way we refuse to quit.
The way we keep loving.
Keep serving.
Keep believing.
Long after the race is over, that's what they'll remember.
Hebrews reminds us,
"Let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus..." (Hebrews 12:1–2)
That's true whether we're climbing a mountain, raising a family, rebuilding after loss, or simply trying to become a little more like Christ each day.
The mountain isn't trying to defeat us. God is using it to refine us. Some mountains reveal our weakness. Others reveal God's strength.
Every mountain offers the same invitation:
Leave behind what weighs you down.
Carry forward only what draws you closer to Him.
Because when we finally reach the summit, we often discover that the greatest victory wasn't standing on top of the mountain.
It was becoming someone different on the way up.

Questions Worth Wrestling With
1. What burden have you been carrying that God is asking you to leave behind?
2. What mountain are you facing right now, and what is it teaching you?
3. Are you allowing your past to define your future, or are you trusting God to redeem your story?
4. What fears continue to whisper that you're not strong enough?
5. Who is watching your life and learning from the way you handle hardship?
6. What kind of example are you setting for your children, your family, or those who look up to you?
7. Are you climbing your mountain to prove yourself to others, or to become the person God is calling you to be?
8. What anger, shame, or regret have you carried for far too long?
9. When life becomes difficult, do you quit, or do you continue taking the next faithful step?
10. How has God already used past struggles to make you stronger?
11. What would your life look like if you truly left your burdens at the feet of Christ?
12. When people remember your journey, will they remember someone who gave up... or someone who refused to bend?
Live It Out
· Read Hebrews 12:1–2, Isaiah 40:29–31, Philippians 3:13–14, and James 1:12. Ask God to show you what is weighing you down and keeping you from running the race He has set before you.
· Write down every burden you've been carrying—fear, anger, regret, shame, disappointment, unforgiveness, or anxiety. Spend time in prayer, surrendering each one to God. Let today become your mountain.
· Challenge yourself to do one difficult thing this week that you've been avoiding. Trust that courage grows one faithful step at a time.
· Encourage someone else who is climbing their own mountain. Sometimes the greatest gift we can give is reminding someone not to quit.
· Spend time reflecting on the people who are watching your life. Ask yourself if your actions point them toward hope, perseverance, and faith.
· Before going to bed each evening, ask yourself:
"What did I leave on the mountain today... and what am I still trying to carry?"
· Pray that God would give you the strength to keep climbing, the wisdom to leave behind what no longer belongs in your life, and the faith to remember that He walks beside you every step of the journey.
The mountain may not change... but with God, you will.
Lyrics:
Leave It on the Mountain
JC Lahoe
Verse 1
Before the sun could find the sky,
He carried years he couldn't hide.
The mountain stood, the silence spoke...
This was more than just a climb.
He came to lay his burdens down...
To face the man he'd been inside.
Not chasing glory... not applause...
Just hoping something here would die.
Pre-Chorus
One more breath... one more strain...
Feel the thunder in your veins.
One more step... one more stride...
Face those demons on that climb.
Chorus
Leave it on the mountain,
Leave it in the rain.
Leave every broken promise,
Every ounce of pain.
Beat your sword against your fear,
Let your children see you stand.
Not because the road was easy...
It almost broke you...
But you wouldn't bend.
Verse 2
Mud and blood upon his hands...
Fire burning in his lungs.
Stars were dancing in his head...
Still the climb was far from done.
He thought about his children's eyes...
When every demon found his ear.
He lifted more than weary feet...
He climbed beyond his fear.
Pre-Chorus
One more breath... one more strain...
Feel the thunder in your veins.
One more step... one more stride...
Face those demons on that climb.
Chorus
Leave it on the mountain,
Leave it in the rain.
Leave every broken promise,
Every ounce of pain.
Beat your sword against your fear,
Let your children see you stand.
Not because the road was easy...
It almost broke you...
But you wouldn't bend.
Bridge
Funny thing about mountains...
They don't care who you are...
They'll humble the strongest...
And reveal your heart.
Leave all the anger...
Leave all the shame...
You don't reach the summit...
Trying to build your name.
Leave all the fear...
Leave all the pride...
Some things can't be carried...
To the other side.
Every step keeps asking...
What you're holding on to...
The mountain never changes...
The mountain changes you.
Final Chorus
Leave it on the mountain,
Leave it in the rain.
Leave every broken promise,
Every ounce of pain.
Beat your sword against your fear,
Let your children see you stand.
Not because the road was easy...
It almost broke you...
But you wouldn't bend.
