THE HEART (BEAT) BEHIND THE SONG

Walking Close to Jesus

“Light in the Darkness” was written from the quiet rhythm of beginning each day with Jesus before the world had a chance to grow loud.

This song was born from simple mornings, stepping outside while the sky was still waking, sitting quietly with coffee nearby, scripture open, and taking intentional time to pray before responsibilities, distractions, and the noise of life began competing for attention.

One lyric says, “Stepping out where the sky’s just waking / Sunlight falling on my face / Take a moment talking to Heaven / Before the world can take its place.” That line came directly from those quiet mornings of devotion. Before work. Before conversations. Before stress. Before expectations. Just time with God.

Another lyric says, “Open Word sitting on the table / Coffee cooling by my side / Ain’t no rush, just being with You / Letting everything align.” That lyric reflects something I learned deeply over time, there is peace in beginning the day rooted in God’s presence.

The world gets loud quickly.

Responsibilities pull at us. Distractions compete for our attention. Fear, pressure, insecurity, exhaustion, and noise all try to shape the direction of our thoughts before we even realize it. But time with Jesus has a way of bringing the heart back into alignment.

This song became deeply connected to the quiet discipline of daily devotion because I learned that faith is not built only in dramatic moments. Faith grows in consistency. In scripture opened when no one else sees. In whispered prayers before sunrise. In surrender repeated day after day.

One lyric says, “Step outside and the world gets louder / Tryna pull me every way / But I hear You in the middle of it / Calling me to walk in faith.” That lyric captures something many of us wrestle with the tension between God’s voice and the noise of everyday life.

Daily time with God became the anchor that helped me return to truth.

His Word became direction. Prayer became peace. Worship became perspective. And over time, those ordinary moments quietly transformed the way I walked through life.

The deeper heart of this song is found in the chorus:

“I wanna be a light in the darkness / Shine where the broken hearts run.”

Because time spent with Jesus is never meant to stop with us.

The more we walk closely with Him, the more His love begins shaping the way we love people. Compassion grows. Patience grows. Grace grows. We become more able to sit beside hurting people, encourage weary hearts, and carry hope into places that feel heavy.

The bridge became a prayer of surrender for me:

“Make me steady, make me kind / Make me look a little more like Christ.”

Because discipleship is not about perfection. It is about transformation.

Slowly learning to reflect Jesus in the unseen places, the ordinary moments, the conversations, the choices, and the way we love people.

One lyric says, “Every moment is a chance to follow / Every breath a chance to choose.” That line reminds me that following Jesus is not built in one moment, it is built daily.

One prayer. One surrender. One faithful step at a time.

My prayer for this song is simple: that people would fall deeply in love with time spent with Jesus. That they would know His Word, recognize His voice, and learn to walk closely enough with Him that their lives quietly become light for someone else, because we are all running a race, and when mine is finished, I hope I can say I stayed close to Him...

a light in the darkness, until He calls me home.

                                                                   Live It Out

  • Spend intentional time with God this week before the world gets loud, even if it is only ten quiet minutes in prayer or scripture.

  • Begin each morning with one simple prayer: “Lord, help me walk close to You today.”

  • Choose one area of your life where you want to reflect Jesus more clearly, kindness, patience, grace, forgiveness, or encouragement... and practice it intentionally.

  • Encourage or sit beside someone who may be carrying heaviness, reminding them they are not alone.

  • Before ending your day, ask yourself: Did my life bring a little more light into someone else’s darkness today?

Lyrics:

Light in the Darkness

Misty Lahoe

Verse 1
Stepping out where the sky’s just waking
Sunlight falling on my face
Take a moment talking to Heaven
Before the world can take its place

Open Word sitting on the table
Coffee cooling by my side
Ain’t no rush, just being with You
Letting everything align

Pre-Chorus
You never walked away from me
Even when I lost my way
I surrender, now show me the way

Chorus
I wanna be a light in the darkness
Shine where the broken hearts run
Be close to Your presence
Till my work here is done

I wanna walk through fire still standing
’Cause I know I’m not walking alone
I wanna be a light in the darkness
Till You call me home

Verse 2
Step outside and the world gets louder
Tryna pull me every way
But I hear You in the middle of it
Calling me to walk in faith

Every moment is a chance to follow
Every breath a chance to choose
Be the light in every shadow
Live a life that points to You

Pre-Chorus
You never walked away from me
Even when I lost my way
I surrender everything

Chorus
I wanna be a light in the darkness
Shine where the broken hearts run
Be close to Your presence
Till my work here is done

I wanna walk through fire still standing
’Cause I know I’m not walking alone
I wanna be a light in the darkness
Till You call me home

Bridge
Make me steady, make me kind
Make me look a little more like Christ
In the small things, in the unseen
Let Your love be what they see

Final Chorus
I wanna be a light in the darkness
Shine where the broken hearts run
Be close to Your presence
Till my work here is done

I wanna walk through fire still standing
’Cause I know I’m not walking alone
I wanna be a light in the darkness
Till You call me home

Outro
Light in the darkness
Close to You

I wanna be a light in the darkness
Till I come home to You
