THE HEART (BEAT) BEHIND THE SONG
Grace Was Waiting When I Came Home
Still I'm Your Own was written from one of the lowest seasons of my life. After an affair, I stepped away from ministry and lost the church community I once called home. I was removed from the Bible study my husband and I had led, and after choosing divorce, I was told I could still attend church, but I was no longer welcome as a member.
Walking back through those church doors took more courage than I knew I possessed. Shame had settled so deeply into my soul that I could barely lift my head. Every step felt heavy. Every worship song reminded me of how broken I believed I was, and it took everything in me to hold back the tears.
One lyric says, "I carried shame I couldn't hide, a heart convinced I'd gone too far." That wasn't simply a lyric. It was exactly how I felt. I believed my failures had defined me and that I would always be known by the worst decision I had ever made.
Another lyric says, "Voices said I lost my place, grace was not for me." While no one can take away God's grace, shame has a way of convincing us that we no longer belong. It whispers that our failures are greater than God's mercy and that there is no place left for us among His people. Those lies can become deafening if we allow them.
Then something happened that changed everything.
As I made my way into the sanctuary, a friend quietly came alongside me, put his arm around me, and walked with me the rest of the way. He didn't preach. He didn't judge. He didn't ask questions. He simply chose to walk beside me.
In that simple act of kindness, I experienced the love of God more powerfully than words ever could.
The song begins to turn with the words, "Mercy met me in the silence, right where my story fell apart." I believe that's often where God does some of His greatest work. Long after the noise has settled and the consequences have become real, His mercy quietly meets us where we are. Not to excuse our sin, but to restore the hearts that have turned back to Him.
The chorus became my declaration:
"You are God Almighty, still You welcome me. I am a child of the risen King, Your grace has set me free."
That truth is found throughout Scripture. Our failures never surprise God, and genuine repentance is never met with rejection. Jesus consistently welcomed the broken, restored those who had fallen, and reminded them that grace always has the final word for those who return to Him.
One of my favorite lines in the song is, "You called me out of hiding, now I know where I belong." Shame always drives us into hiding, just as it did with Adam and Eve in the Garden. Grace, however, calls us back into the light. God never asks His children to live hidden behind their failures. He invites us to come home.
The bridge became one of the most personal moments in the song:
"Your grace is bigger than my past. Your mercy stronger than my shame."
Those words remind me that while consequences are real, they are not the end of the story. God's mercy is always greater than our deepest failure when we humble ourselves
before Him.
My prayer for this song is that anyone who feels too broken, too ashamed, or too far gone to walk back into church will find the courage to take that first step. If you have truly repented and turned back to God, know that your Heavenly Father has never stopped loving you. His grace is greater than your worst mistake, His mercy is stronger than your deepest shame, and His arms remain open.
No matter where you've been or what you've done, through Christ, you are still His own.

Live It Out
-
Spend time this week thanking God not only for forgiving your sins but for continuing to call you His beloved child.
-
If shame has kept you from church, Christian community, or serving God, prayerfully consider taking one step toward returning and reconnecting with other believers.
-
Look for an opportunity this week to extend the same grace to someone else that God has extended to you.
-
Read Luke 15 and reflect on the Father's heart for those who return home. Ask God to help you see yourself through His eyes instead of your failures.
-
Replace one lie you've believed about yourself with a truth from Scripture each day this week. Let God's Word become louder than your shame.
-
Be the person who walks beside someone instead of judging them. A simple act of kindness may become the moment they experience God's love in a way they'll never forget.

Intro
You are God Almighty…
Verse 1
I carried shame I couldn't hide
A heart convinced I'd gone too far
I laid down everything I loved
And walked away with broken scars
Voices said I lost my place
Grace was not for me
So I snuck into the back
Praying I could still believe
Pre-Chorus
Mercy met me in the silence
Right where my story fell apart
Chorus
You are God Almighty
Still You welcome me
I am a child of the risen King
Your grace has set me free
You called me out of hiding
Now I know where I belong
You are God Almighty
Still I'm Your own
Verse 2
I stayed there through the quiet
Not sure if I belonged
Every word and every worship
Felt like it proved me wrong
Then someone reached beside me
And gently took my hand
In that simple act of kindness
I felt Your mercy stand
Chorus
You are God Almighty
Still You welcome me
I am a child of the risen King
Your grace has set me free
You called me out of hiding
Now I know where I belong
You are God Almighty
Still I'm Your own

Your grace is bigger than my past
Your mercy stronger than my shame
You didn't turn Your face away
Even when I fell... even when I ran away
You still call me by name
You still call me by name
Not abandoned, not alone
Through it all I'm still Your own
I am a child of the risen King
Your grace has set me free
