THE HEART (BEAT) BEHIND THE SONG
Faith Bigger Than Fear
“Joan of Arc” was written during a season where I was fighting battles internally that often felt bigger than me. While I was not standing on a battlefield carrying a sword the way Joan of Arc did, I was fighting battles in my own mind and heart; fear, insecurity, self-doubt, and the overwhelming feeling that I was not enough for what God had placed in front of me.
One of the lines in the song says, “Maybe I’m not facing swords tonight, but I’m fighting battles in my mind.” That lyric became deeply personal to me because some of the hardest battles people face are the ones nobody else can see.
There were moments where I truly felt too small to overcome what was standing in front of me. Fear constantly whispered that I did not have what it takes. Doubt made every obstacle feel larger. I think many people quietly carry that same feeling; wondering if they are strong enough, brave enough, qualified enough, or capable enough to survive what life places before them.
That is what drew me so powerfully to the story of Joan of Arc.
Joan was only a teenage girl when she believed God was calling her to help lead France during one of the darkest periods in its history. By every worldly standard, she seemed like the least likely person imaginable to carry such a responsibility. She had no military training, no social status, and no reason for people to believe she could accomplish what she claimed God was asking her to do.
But God has always had a way of using unlikely people.
What moves me most about Joan’s story is not simply her bravery, but her obedience. She trusted God’s voice even when fear, opposition, ridicule, danger, and suffering surrounded her. History remembers her as a warrior, but at the center of her story was faith. She loved God deeply, and even through persecution and death, she refused to deny the faith that carried her.
The lyric “You don’t call the strong and brave, You make the brave from those You save” became one of the emotional foundations of this song because it reflects something I have learned personally in my own life. God does not wait for people to become fearless before He calls them. Very often, He builds courage inside ordinary people while they are still walking through fear.
Zechariah 4:6 says, “Not by might nor by power, but by my Spirit, says the Lord Almighty.” That verse became deeply connected to this song for me because real strength does not always come from confidence, power, or human ability. Sometimes strength simply means standing again after fear has tried to knock you down.
Another lyric says, “Courage doesn’t always roar, sometimes faith just stands once more.” I believe that kind of courage is often overlooked. Sometimes bravery is not loud. Sometimes bravery looks like getting up another day, continuing to trust God while battling anxiety, choosing faith while facing uncertainty, or refusing to surrender to hopelessness.
Joshua 1:9 reminds us to “Be strong and courageous… for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.” That promise matters deeply because courage becomes possible when we realize we are not fighting alone.
My prayer for this song is that people listening will remember they are not disqualified by weakness, fear, insecurity, or feeling unseen. God often chooses people who feel the least prepared to reveal His strength most clearly.
The battles people face today may not look like Joan’s battlefield, but many of us still fight silent wars within our hearts and minds every day; and sometimes the greatest victory is simply refusing to stop listening for God’s voice in the middle of fear.

Lyrics:
Joan of Arc
Misty Lahoe
Verse 1
She was just a girl from a nowhere place
No armor on, just fire and faith
A quiet voice in the dead of night
Saying stand up… it’s time to fight
They said you’re too small to change a thing
No one hears the prayers you sing
But heaven moves when hearts believe
And she believed in everything
Pre-Chorus
You were with her through the flame
She loved You more than earthly fame
Chorus
I wanna be brave like Joan of Arc
Hear Your voice louder than the dark
When fear says run, I’ll stand my ground
Even when the flames surround
I wanna be fearless like Joan of Arc
Show the world another burning heart
Let my faith be bigger than my fear
When You speak, make it all I hear
Like Joan of Arc
Verse 2
Maybe I’m not facing swords tonight
But I’m fighting battles in my mind
Doubts that whisper I’m too small
Fear that tells me I might fall
But courage doesn’t always roar
Sometimes faith just stands once more
And every giant still goes down
When Your strength is what I’ve found
Pre-Chorus
You were with her through the flame
She loved You more than earthly fame
Chorus
I wanna be brave like Joan of Arc
Hear Your voice louder than the dark
When fear says run, I’ll stand my ground
Even when the flames surround
I wanna be fearless like Joan of Arc
Show the world another burning heart
Let my faith be bigger than my fear
When You speak, make it all I hear
Like Joan of Arc

Bridge
She was human, she was scared
But she knew that You were there
You don’t call the strong and brave
You make the brave from those You save
So when I feel I’m not enough
Remind me what Your love has done
The same hands that were holding her
Are reaching out to calm my fear
Final Chorus
I wanna be brave like Joan of Arc
Hear Your voice louder than the dark
When fear says run, I’ll stand my ground
Even when the flames surround
I wanna be fearless like Joan of Arc
Show the world another burning heart
Let my faith be bigger than my fear
When You speak, make it all I hear
